Between Summer and Rest

"Almost everything will work again if you unplug it for a few minutes, including you." — Anne Lamott

Hello Reader,

(für Deutsch unten)

We've entered September, that slow transition where summer ends and autumn begins. The heat softens, the shadows grow longer, night falls earlier, and our feet find their way back into shoes.

In Bavaria, where I live, we're still on school holidays for another two weeks, so time is moving in its own slower rhythm, nothing like our normal work and school days. Right now I'm in rural Italy, enjoying the quiet of the countryside, giving myself space to think and feel rather than rush.

Vacations can be lived two ways- packed with activities, or slowed all the way down- more sleep, longer meals, more books, more time simply experienced instead of spent. These next few weeks are dedicated to the latter, to feel whatever needs to be felt when things finally slow down.

I find myself restless, unused to stillness after so much motion. I'm letting that restlessness be there instead of covering it with another plan or task. It's uncomfortable to sit with- which is exactly the sign that this is the work I need to be doing.

When we're constantly moving, busy organizing and planning, we miss what lies beneath the surface asking for attention. Underneath the busyness can be fear, sadness, anger, anxiety, grief- a whole host of feelings we'd rather mask with "happy" and "productive."

But there can also be ideas, creative impulses, questions wanting answers, new interests, and space for the projects that have been whispering for our attention- the ones we haven't lingered long enough in the silence to actually hear.

I believe that when we stay buttoned up, busy, and full, we risk missing what's really there for us. We are mind, body, heart, and spirit, and all four deserve equal space. Our culture leans so heavily on the mind that the other three often get neglected.

When we make time to connect to spirit, through silence and meditation, we open ourselves to messages that would otherwise pass us by. That connection to source strengthens our inner world. But it's a practice, one that asks for consistent time and space, day after day.

So what might happen if you gave your heart and spirit more room in your life?

When we really connect to what's underneath the spreadsheets, the organizing, the low-grade daily drama- what's there? It's different for each of us. A longing to live differently. A healing journey. An opening into creativity. Whatever it is, something in each of us is asking to be seen, felt, and given space.

This fall and winter, I'm creating spaces for women, especially those living busy, full lives, to join me in nature, slow down, and sit with the questions of the heart beneath all the movement.

Roots and Embers — October 8–11

A 3.5-day nature retreat for women, hosted with nature coach Anne Binneboßel at Inner Nature in the Bayerischer Wald. This is an invitation to step outside your comfort zone — because that's always where the magic lives — sleep under a tarp or the stars, spend focused, intentional time in nature, and share around the fire with other women. It's a shift from organizing to softness, a chance to ask the questions that have been percolating and explore what's been asking for attention. A few spots remain — get in touch with any questio

Samhain Sweatlodge — October 30 – November 1

My annual sweatlodge, also at Inner Nature in the Bayerischer Wald, opened this year with Wildnis Gemeinschaft. This ceremonial space is for honoring our ancestors, paying respects to Mother Earth, and celebrating the Celtic New Year — sweating our prayers, reflecting on our lives, and continuing the work of healing, clearing, and connecting with each other and the spirit world. This one is open to both men and women. It's one of the best ways I know to close the year and welcome winter's season of rest. Everyone is welcome — get in touch for more info.

Coming soon

Winter Solstice women's circles and a retreat to welcome 2027, both co-hosted with my sweet sister Katharina Koch. Still in the works — details to follow.

A few changes to the newsletter itself: I'm adding book recommendations from now on, and soon, a "What I'm Cooking" section. I'm putting more focus on bringing food into this community- including a Disco Brunch near Köln in November, private cooking events available to book, and (yes, I've heard you!) a cookbook in the works. More on all of this soon.

Thank you for being part of this little community. I hope you'll join me in nature, or around the table, where we can share from the heart and experience this life together, in all its facets.

Sending love and sunshine,

Amie

DEUTSCH

„Roots and Embers“ – 8. bis 11. Oktober

Amie

I've been (and still am) on summer break in the Italian countryside. This break has been divided into action and rest. I am now in the rest phase of it, before life starts again with school and schedules and work, and am very much enjoying the peace of rural Italy, a lovely villa that inspires with it's endless rows of books -and most of all, solid time with my family.

What I'm reading

I've decided to add a new section to this newsletter. I am an avid reader and am directing my life more in the literary direction, so I think it's only right to share writers that are inspiring to me.

This is my first book by Elif Shafak and I've heard many wonderful things about her books and her as a woman over the years. I'm looking forward to The Forty Rules of Love, which is about Rumi.

There are Rivers in the Sky is most recent book tells the tale of 3 people in different places in history, all bonded by water. Her writing is rich in details and she paints a strong picture of life throughout the ages.

I just finished Whistler by Ann Patchett and Theo of Golden by Allen Levi, both of which are feel good, heart based books that I can recommend when you need something light, sweet and heartfelt.

"Nature does not hurry, yet everything is accomplished."- Lao Tzu Hello Reader, (für Deutsch unten) I think one of the most important questions we can ask each other right now is, “How are you?”, and then actually stay long enough to hear the real answer. Not the automatic, “I’m good,” because are we really “good”? As my therapist keeps reminding me, “good” is not a feeling- it’s a shield. Spring is here, and the world is shifting whether we are ready or not. Color is pushing through the grey...

"Your task is not seek for love, but merely to seek and find all of the barriers within yourself that you have built against it." - Rumi Hello Reader, (für Deutsch unten) The year is winding down and winter is settling in (or at least it should be...). Lately, I’ve been reflecting on why this season feels like such a paradox- both draining AND nourishing all at once. When we take a moment to look back, we can see how we’ve changed-where we’ve grown, what we’ve worked through, what we’ve...

“It is good to have an end to journey toward; but it is the journey that matters, in the end.” - Ursula K. Le Guin Hello Reader, (für Deutsch unten) As autumn settles over the Northern Hemisphere, it brings a different weight, a quiet energy of change. It marks the end of summer and the slow turning toward winter, a season of darkness, rest, and reflection. Autumn is the in-between; no longer what was, not yet what’s to come. So much of life happens in these in-between spaces. We’re often...
